Even on my first run down the track ive always footbraked my car to 1500rpm and then let it fly. Eighty some passes later and a couple seconds off the timeslips and I still follow the same routine.
Now it comes to the main question...is it better to footbrake the car and build some rpm up for the launch or floor the car at idle and let the converter do the rest of the work? Ive never tried leaving at idle and some people over on SSOTN were telling me it would give me better traction and the car would be faster.

when the transmission was stock i would leave at 1800 but i think that was only b/c the converter was screwed up b/c after 1500 it starts moving forward now. So i hold it at 1500 and go....i think this is better b/c the engine is less likely to bog or stuter or anything, but doing that will cause u to spin more and maybe idle launchs would help my times.
Since u have slicks it should be able to handle doing this. Hell...try some idle launches and you'll find out lol

From what i understand, footbraking is not the proper way to launch a converter. It doesnt allow the same inertia, and initial 'hit', that a pure 'flash' would......

I would think that a car with the typical bolt-ons and stock gears, it would be better to foot-brake it off the line. Now maybe with say, 3.55's or better and a loose converter...hit it off idle and take advantage of the torque converters flash speed. But hey, thats my opinion.

Andrew, there's no "set in stone" way to launch your car...You need to find what works for you and your specific combo.
My old LX loved launching at 1800 rpm's...it 60 footed at low 1.5's
Launching from idle, the car 60 footed slower, which made the whole pass slower...Launching any higher, the car would blow the tires off...
I had the advantage of racing that car for almost 6 years and had the luxury of a couple hundred passes in the car...Trial and Error...
"itslegal" launches from an idle and yanks the wheels up a foot, if he footbrakes his car, it slows down...like I said, mine was 180* opposite of his, yet both cars ran low 10's...
MY 94 with the AOD out of the old LX and a loose 3800 stall converter also ran quicker when footbraked...launching from an idle, the car was 2 to 3/10th's slower...I proved it on three separate track outings...
Do what works for you...

PI 3500, 3.55's, 26" tire....

My car likes it when I hold it at 1,500 and then mash it on the 3rd yellow. If I try to foot break it any higher, the 60' times seem to suffer.

i stall just above idle 1000rpms then flash my 3000 stall converter and cut 1.7 60ft's
