Hello I'm new here and i've heard this is the best place to talk about your aod questions. I have a 91 GT stang with full exhaust, 3.73 gears, and misalaneous bolt ons...I have a Vortech V3 SCi trim 5-6 psi supercharger kit in my garage and was wondering if i'm only running 5 psi if my Baumann valvebody recalibration kit strengthens the transmission enough to drive it safely?? Thanks!

In this event I would suggest a boost in pressure as well which the BE kit does not do, at least it didn't used to.
That kit will work great, but be absolutely sure you put the tv cable in good spec.

Okay! Well i'm going to pay a professional to do it so no worries about the tv cable there...So with the BE kit, how much power do you think my AOD will be able to take...It'll be under 300 hp i'm sure....do you think it'll handle that? I've heard a shift kit from transgo will help!!! Thanks

Alrighty Thanks.. Well since im guna have this done anyway, what else should i do to my tranny to make it stronger that won't break the bank so to speak....
i`m driving a 70 stang, 5.0 (for now...) with paxton sn, 6 psi, 3.25 rear end, assuming i have around 300hp, and its a hot country (like california).
my AOD is totaly stock with transgo hp shift kit. works real good.
i have a bad ass 408 and a 4R70W waiting to be installed........

What about something like an Alto Direct Clutch Pack Kit? I've heard this will increase the durability on ur aod drastically, is this true? If you had to pay a professional transmission shop to install the transgo shift kit and the clutch plates, how much (ballpark) would they charge total???

If you are going to rebuild the trans, a shop might opt for that Alto kit, I personally do not like them due to the thin clutches and thing steels - any heat or slip and they are toast - the 6 clutches with quality clutches is fine for anything under 500 hp, the big ticket items are the mechanical diode, 2" band, and valve body.

Alright thanks so much Silverfox, you've been an unbelievable good help to me! I've got the valve body..whats a good mechanical diode and 2" band to get? poissbly send a link? thanks!!

Outside of the direct clutches, the biggest failures in the AOD are
1-2 intermediate roller diode
cast direct drum
stock OD band
low shitty soft shifting valve body that eats clutches alive
input shaft
those are your big 5 on the AOD. Mech diode eliminates the roller diode and gets you 2" band - two birds in one.
Cast direct drum is prone to snapping after 400hp with hard shifts - stamped drum will not.
Input shaft is prone to snapping after 400hp with hard shifts - 300m aftermarket
valve body, shift kit mandatory in all AODS

Alright well i'll prolly just do that valvebody then, cuz im not looking for anymore than 400hp...valve body and shift kit are the same thing right?? How about if i just get this? http://www.latemodelrestoration.com/item/PAI-53416/83-93-Ford-Mustang-AOD-Shift-Kit

IMO any aod with a roller clutch and a 1.5 inch band is not suitable for any form of performance driving.

is this the upgrade your talking about? I am in the process of upgrading my aod and was looking at this item on ebay. Let me know what you think. Thanks

a shift kit is YOU drilling and installing parts into your stock valve body, all items are user friendly.
a Valve body like mine is ME doing all the expereince work, my own shift mods, and many things that shift kits don't address, or not a quality.
The end result of custom valve body is quality and customizations shift kits do not address. Under 500 HP many kits are acceptable.

Silverfox, i've been really confused on what valve body i should buy because i got so many people telling me certain ones are good and some aren't....when it comes to automatic transmissions, im "ar-tarded"....is something like the recal pro valve body recalibration kit ($59.99) different from the street cruiser aod valvebody from lentech automatics ($345.00)???
What about the street cruiser aod valvebody from lentech automatics?? Theres so many..baumann engineering, Tci auto, Transgo, Lentech automatics, Performance automatic, etc....uhhh i just don't know where to begin..
I'm not looking for anything over 300hp....just send me a link on what will be best for me please! I just want my transmission to be OK with some more simple mods, that's all.. Thanks!

The BEcontrols.com kit is best, go there, done.

That one valve body recalibration kit will be good up to 300 hp? alright that settles it. thanks

yea - there are more mods that I perform in My vb's, but obviously it is not a DIY kit.

I use Dan's valvebodies in every AOD I build. 1/2 the cost of a lentech and work as good if not better.
The direct clutch I have a standard setup I do because it is inexpensive. The real strength in direct comes in the drum itself. I build the drums 3 different ways and only use stamped steel drums.
option #1 stock drum, machined spacer to accept 7 late 4r70w frictions and .80 steels.
option #2 same as above with drum center oil hardened
option #3 300m center machined drum and spacer to accept 8 late 4r70w frictions using 5 .50 steels and 3 .70 steels.

How much approximately will a shop charge to install the baumann recalibration kit? What's a fair amount for the labor?!
