wondering if the combo a friend is putting together is okay.
The car is a 89 GT with the following mods
cobra intake
cold air
NOS big shot 150 jetting
and 3.55 gears
and the car is a stick
he is adding the AFR 165 heads and a comp cam it is about the same as a e cam

I just built a fresh engine for my AOD convertible. I'm very happy with the AFR165's. FWIW, I have a Cobra intake, an AFM cam (about the same as an X cam), and 410 gears...naturally aspirated...makes plenty of power. I'm sure with the juice, that car will run well....assuming it has the fuel system and tuning to support it...

Eric's right...it's the older B-25...not much changed from the present day B-21/B-31. It's a blower grind, but seems to work well in my car. Plus, if I ever get another blower...I'll be ready...hehe.
FWIW, I've ALWAYS been a fan of the Edelbrock 6037/60379 Performer 5.0 heads, but after trying the AFR165's, it's doubtful I'll ever own another set of E'brocks again...

Did you have to use different springs or pushrods with the AFR's?

Stock springs that came with them and stock length pushrods for now. The AFM cam actually calls for .040" longer pushrods...a minor adjustment I somehow overlooked...lol...I'm running at just a hair tighter than zero lash, but the slightly longer pushrods will enable me to get my desired 1/4 turn past zero lash setting...Buddy Rawls, the custom cam guru, says that a "proper" valvetrain sounds like a sewing machine at idle...mine does, but I don't like it. IMO, a hydraulic camshaft should be quiet...period.
i had afr 165s and a b-31 on my stock 93 shortblock... car ran its ass off. great heads 8)

Bob, did you ever end up changing pushrods? Will 185's work with stock pistons or is 165 the biggest you can go without notching them?

they will work but you are really limited on cam selection

what's the biggest you can go like an e or tfs stage 1 type lift?

If that, I personally would NOT risk it...
My shortblock (bought used) had definite valve impressions from the AFR185's and an F cam...the car it came from had some definite and major over-revving before I bought it, but even so....definite contact...
