Yellow tops are deep cycle batteries and they don't charge properly off an alternator. Red tops aren't deep cycle and charge right in a car. Yellow tops are better for stereo systems or boats.

the yellow tops are deep cycle as Mike said, and they can go with out being charged for long periods of time, they can also be fully discharged without hurting them. the red tops are real sensitive to being fully discahrge(like all batteries actually) i run a red top and love it, as a matter of fact i still have my first red top that is over 7yrs old

I have had both and found the red top to be better for a daily driven car and the yellow for cars that sit a lot of the time since they hold a charge better and like someone said, they can survive when fully discharged. Napa sells its own version of the red top now and its cheaper than the Optimas....I can get them for under $80

I still have my red top that was in my 91 escort. It now resides in the stang. Had it for approx 4 years now.
