Is there a way to bolt the newer 5R55S trans to a 302 block. Is it a better trans than the 4R70W? Going to use an automatic for drag racing and was curious. will have to have a 7000-7400 stall converter for Pure Street. Thanks

I have rebuilt 2 A4LD's and in my research I have not heard of any. I think I seen on the explorer forum that there is not one.

5r55, no, and it is a complicated trans to control...needs electronics for sure...one slip here means dead trans.
4R is more reliable IMO.

I dont know if it can be done...but they seem to be a great transmission as far as performance.

They shift lightning fast and keep the rpms high with the 5 gears.

In stock form they cant really handle more than 400 hp reliably.

I called a ton of people including JW, TCI, PA, and a few others. Nobody makes a kit that will hook it up to the 302. However there is a company that will make me an adaptor (one-off custom) for about $600. Couple of people told me that it requires electronics. guess ill have to settle for the 4 speed auto 4r70w..

The AOD is too heavy and I have to leave the line at 7400rpms to even keep up with the Tremec 5 speeds. Thanks for all your help guys

Talk with Amy Sherwin...I believe she runs an AOD with a 6700 stall converter.

I talked with her in BG this year. A little pricey. Cameron at Torque Converter Services is going to build my automatic. He just built the PG that set the new world record as well. His quote was a couple grand cheaper than the AOD your talking about. That was with a custom converter.

Gonna run a glide huh? I think for what you are doing, it will be an excellent choice. Only one shift too!

4R70W is stronger the 555 splits gears to get on of its gears....

tci has a beefed up on and they even say it isnt that strong.

Rules in Pure Street wont allow a glide. I was just saying that the guy building my trans is the same guy that built the powerglide that holds the record.....he knows what he is doing!

Best of luck with the automatic in Pure Street! When (and if) I move up to Factory Stock, I'll be running an automatic as well. I think if done right, it can be very competative.

Dragging up an old thread. PA transmission was at the Carlisle Ford Nationals this past weekend. Seems they have a bell housing and electronics kit that would allow this swap. After I left the idea started to intrigue me. There is nothing about it on their website so far as I can tell. Time for a phone call. I'm sure one could pick up a used 5r in good shape from an S197 guy who swapped to a 4R on an AOD. Swap in a converter, hardened shaft and a catch can for the dreaded vent tube and be good to go.

I seen a very small article in either mm&ff or 5.0 mag. a few months back, they had a pic and a small caption about a 5r55 to 302 adapter, i think it was PA.

until I can work my magic with one of these, I won't own one.

Until I don't see parts that are 1/8 inch thick and taking all the load I won't own one.

I called PA on a whim.....They sell the whole thing -- trans, adapter, wiring, ecu, EVERYTHING, but will not separate any items as of yet. Best price I saw was on Jegs @ around 4800...... I see used 5r55's all day long in perfect condition for under $500 I'm sure I could piece something together for less that would be a durable combo.....

Something for the future.....

The 6r60 would be in my consideration first.

I am switching from a 5R to a 4R because as good as the 5 speed is its limitations are way short of the 4R
