Popping Through the Exhaust

Can anyone tell me what might cause my car to start popping through the exhaust at about 5300 to 5600 rpm's? It usually does it right before my shift light comes on, so I wouldn't think it would be the rev limiter.

sometimes valvefloat can cause that.....how old are your springs?
