the new "sportsman" block that i believe World Products is marketing... might be Dart (i'm pretty sure the two are connected anyhow).. supposed to come almost fully machined, 4 bolt caps on 2,3 and 4, 1 and 5 are strengthened 2 bolt caps so you can use an oem style oil pan (as opposed to the dart race blocks) deck height is 8.200" like usual... i assume it is a siamesed bore design as it is supposed to be as strong or stronger than an R302 for several hundred less... anyway, it looks like this is the direction i will be going when i sell my novi 2000, scott save that nice stroker kit and stuff another j/y motor up in 'er and get in on this deal with me... i'm hoping if i get a few people to order a block with me, we might be able to get an even better price.. i'll be picking up the block when brian and i go to get his race motor in a month or so... price for brand new in the crate is around $1400-$1500 and it shouldn't need $600+ worth of machine work to get it assembled like an R block... if anybody has more information on this block, please post up or drop a link.. i am yet to find any "official" press releases on it... thanks..

hey scott.. i know how you feel... i am the same way... the only reason i can afford this block is i am unloading my novi 2000 i JUST finished paying for... i am still pissed over getting hosed on that other short block i bought and i decided the only way to make sure that didnt happen again was to put one together again... imho there is no point putting a killer rotating assembly (all forged) into a stock block because you will never be able to extract its full potential... especially rpm wise.. with any kind of reliable longevity... plus the upside to dropping the cash on the block is the motor will have tremendous resale value... 4 bolt shortblocks START around $3500 used.... i wont be getting the block for at least another month until brian and i go out to pick up his motor, so the offer remains open to you, or anyone... i will have a better idea of what the final price with a finish bore and hone to my spec and misc finishing touches will amount to shortly... i'm expecting to spend around $1800 by the time i get it punched +.040 or +.035, have the cam bearings installed and the lifter bores honed(if they even need it)
eric, thanks for posting up that info on the Dart blocks.. that was basically all i could find on those too... and that aftermarket pan of which they speak, costs about $800  because they have to clear the massive #1 & #5 main caps which are also 4 bolt (however not splayed)...

I just noticed that chart didn't include their new Sportsman 302 block which is comparable to the r-302. It has steel 4 bolt cetners and 2 bolts ends. Dart says you can use a standard oil pan with dipstick on them. Post up the price for the block when you know. For $1,400 - $1,500 I'd bet you might have some buyers.

ok, here's what i'll do (hopefully by the weekend), i will try to obtain the following information :
1. cost of the block as received from Dart
2. cost of any finishing machine work and boring as per my/ your spec
3. timeline for when brian anticipates going to retreive his motor
4. possiblity of a small scale group buy
when i have these things figured out, maybe we can put together a list of those interested.. if any... i'll talk to brian, my guess is there may be a small charge for transporting them (mainly to help defray travel costs of driving cross country) maybe $50 or $75 per block??? anyhow, those are details that can be worked out later.. i will also pass this on now that i have decided on going this route...
A4 block 4.050" bore good condition, no cracks or sleeves, guy name eric in moroso florida has it, i talked to him on the phone for a while, he might be interested in trades for some chevy parts it sounds like, he goes by the name "yz 250" on the boards, i believe he posted on www.nmraracing.com and www.corral.com asking $1000 seemed reasonable to me
oh, and if one of you mods, or someone a lil better known than i, want to spread the word to anyone who might be interested it would be appreciated. if there seems to be any sort of interest i'll post up personal contact info for myself so i can be reached more easily...

Well, I just ordred my Dart sportsman block last week from Keith Craft. They had the best price on the block (not machined) for $1695. The cost of machining by them would have costed an additional $800.
You can get the block machined for $300-400.
Total cost for mine, including oil pan & dipstick was $2300. This included shipping (freight via big truck). The broke it down. Shipping alone will be around $250-275. Its a big bulky item, but due to a limited order, shipping is very expensive.

well.. its looking like total cost for the block and finish machine work (finish hone cylinder walls and true the deck) will start around $1600-$1700... obviously, any tricks and tweaks to the block will incur further charges as appropriate...
