View Full Version : T5 Second Gear Woes

Hey Guys,

I broke the second gear in my T5 AGAIN last week. Didn't take any boost to do this either, just some hard acceleration to pass a traffic blockade.

Who knows anything about a harder gear set? I keep replacing that bad luck gear and the countershaft every time that this happens. I'm just getting no luck with that stuff from All Trans in Oregon.

I want an Astro Performance Super T5 gear set, but don't have the $2,000 right now. What other options are there for the mid range stuff?

I really don't beat on this car - the second gear is just weak in that W.C. T5.

Any ideas are appreciated....

Your best bet for right now would be to remove the 3.35 1st gear and install the 2.95 1st gear from the 1993 trans. 2nd gear gets weak from hard shifting from 1st to 2nd due to the large ratio difference.

I had issues with 2nd gear in my T-5. First time it was just synchros. Second time I broke 2nd gear. Third time I grenaded 2nd gear and took out the countershaft. This was due to a lot of power shifting.

So I wend to the 1993 mustang 1st gear , which doesn't have such a huge span, and replaced everything broken again. It was fine after that until I sold the car.

That's not such a bad idea, and something that does sound encouraging.

I never power shifted it, OR hard shifted the transmission, ever. I baby the thing, and rarely drive it if ever. Usually the car camps out in the garage - my room mate says that I wrench on it more than I drive it and she's right. :o)

Every time that I have grenaded second, I always change out the countershaft, bearings, synchros and seals.

This here is a pic from the last time that I blew it up.

Looks like your parts are sub-standard. All my broken parts have been from hard driving - powershifting, high rpm downshifts, etc.

I would get my parts from either Astro Performance, Hanlon Motorsports or Artie from Artspeformance (he is a vendor here).

BTW, what does the countershaft look like?

The countershaft from the above pic was also toast. Let me see if I have any photos of that to show you guys.

I called Hanlon today and ordered a replacement countershaft, and a new second and a new third gear. I think the gear set was $305 shipped.

They also had another gear set for $450 that covered 1,2,3 and 4 with a countershaft but the first gear ration was 2.95:1. Linda at Hanlon told me that this gear set was rated at 5 more ft/lbs above the 3.35:1 gear set, and since I love low first gears, I opted to keep the deeper first gear.

Should be here by late next week or perhaps early week after next.

That is the gear set out of the 1993 mustang. I've had nothing but great luck with parts purchased from Hanlon.

Well, we shall hope that your luck continues to me too! I'll need it. Tired of doing this every spring. :o
