Smoke????

Was just test driving the car and noticed smoke coming through the shifter and underneath the car(don't know from where) from the rear view mirror. It had a weird smell to it, kinda hard to describe. I do have bad mufflers and was on my way to get them installed until this happened. Would it be the mufflers? Could it be tranny related if it came through shifter?

I have somewhat new longtubes with shorty catted h-pipe. They were installed about 4 years ago, but just started driving it in the past month. The smell was kinda like a chemical smell. Could it be ceramic that they use in cats?
