Well my goal for this year was to run 10's on a drag radial with this 3500# plus car. Well first time out with the AOD it went 10.50. So with cooler air in the forecast and a 3.15" pulley sitting in the garage I figured I would try to get a single digit run. :p So I swapped out the 3.33" pulley for the 3.15" and headed for the track Sunday. The DA was about sea level all day. So that was great. And the track had sun to keep it warm.

The first pass I ran a 10.039 @ 138.10. The tight 2600 stall was killing my 60' as usual. Nothing like having a low 10 second car with a 1.65 60' :? Looking at the data log Bob Kurgan and I saw the timing was high. Well I made a tuning error. So bob corrected it and we went back for another pass. 10.034 @ 139.49. Damn not what I was hoping for. haha So we checked the data log and made a small adjustment in timing. The fuel correction was less than 2% the whole run. I tell you that Kurgan can tune! lol So the next pass I finally ran a 9.91 @ 139.95. Another small timing adjustment and it ran 9.90 @ 140.12. Getting quicker little by little. That pass I hit the rev limiter on the 1-2 and 2-3 shift a little. The 1-2 shift is a little slow compared to the 2-3 shift. So I need to get used to that a little. I was also next to a friend who cuts lights and has a low 1.4 60'. So I am sure me playing catch up had something to do with me over reving it a little. So we left the tune and just looked to make a clean pass off the rev limiter. I made a pass just barley hitting the rev limiter on the 1-2 shift and it went 9.832 @ 140.24. The staging lanes were closing so I ran right back to the staging lanes that were empty. With it still running and no cool down the car went 9.941 @139.76. I was real happy with that. I can hot lap the car and loose very little in ET and MPH.

Here is the timeslip.

I think over the winter I will send the converter out to be re stalled. Maybe add a trans break too. I also have to address the issue of hitting a 7200rpm rev limiter with a 275/60/15 drag radial. I might have to drop the gear down some more. It is a 3.70 now. I had visions of running a 275/40/17 drag radial but I think I would need a 3.00 gear to make it out the back door around 6500. lol

It looks like I need a cage and a few other items as well. Kurgan is already talking YSi for the car next year. I think he has more in mind for the car than I do. hahaha We will see what happens. I will keep you guys posted.

Thanks guys.

Eric, I have no doubt with the correct converter you will run faster than I did. I have a 2500 stall killing my 60'. And I bet you have more average power than I do with the extra cubes.

A quick run down is this

Dart Iron Eagle 331
AFR 185's mildly portmatched
Holley Systemax II port matched
Cam 232/242 @ .050 .544/.560 112 on a 112
Vortech T-trim with 3.15"/8" pulleys (20# @ 7000rpm)
83# injectors
AEM Engine Management System
1 5/8" un-equal length shorty headers
2 1/2" H pipe with Dynomax Ultra flow cat back
AOD with Lentech VB w/o break, unknown internals, PI converter
Ford 9" rear with 3.70 gear

These passes were on borrowed 275/60/15 MT drag radials. I want to run my street 275/40/17 MT drag radials. But I need a gear change to about a 3.00 gear. hahahaha I was hitting the 7200 rev limiter before hitting the finish line with the taller tires. At least I should get great gas mileage on the highway with the 3.00 gear. HAHAHA

Wow a 3.0 gear. Do you think that will kill you 60'?

Very impressive, Bob seems to really know the AEM.

Do you have any Logs of the runs?

Thanks guys.

Well right now the 3.70 gear and the 28" tall tire is about a 3.43 gear and 26" tall tire. With the results I have so far it looks like I have about 8% converter slip. That may tighten up just a little when I send it out. But wanting to have enough gear to run 150mph (yes, I am think one day it will get there) a 3.00 would be the gear with the 26" tall tire. A 3.10 gear would be good for about 145mph and a 3.25 gear would be good for about 138mph. So if I was not planning on going faster in the 1/4 the 3.25 may work ok.

I think the gear will hurt the 60' times. But the higher stall in the converter should help it. And so will more power. So I may be right where I am now. lol But at least I will be able to run it out the back door off the rev limiter and at a lower engine rpm.

Sounds like a good plan to me. I was just curious as I may be in the same situation when I finally get this thing driving.

Congrats man on the ET'S. It's a great feeling to run faster then what your expecting. It's amazing how much gearing the car properly helps. I played the gear game last year going from 4.30's to 3.73's to 4.10's then back to 4.30's. The 4.30's were perfect I shift 8000rpm and cross traps at 7900 with this gearing.

Yea, I am not 100% sold on a gear yet. I have a feeling plans may change between now and spring. But you can at least see my reasoning for the gears I am looking at.

Thanks. And I have seen people do that before too. Lots of work and trial and error. I am not sure I want to do that. I don't like working on my car that much. haha

It really is a street car and will never be 100% optimized combo for the track. I know this and am fine with it. I told myself this car will always be on the street. That is why the a/c, heat, p/s and p/w all still work. So some compromise is fine. And I am not sold on a gear 100% right now. Things may change a little over winter. So come spring it make even more power. I am not convinced a 3.10 gear will make it a pig and a 3.25 will make a world of difference. So I am going to hold off until spring to pick a gear.

Then I am always reminding my self I only wanted a 10 second street car. hahaha

I would wait and see what the converter does before you decide on a gear.

I hope my car runs that well when i get it to the track. I'm just having issues with this AOD(most likely self inflicted).

Well I started to pull the motor and trans today. I drained the trans fluid and now I am worried. The fluid looked good and didn't smell burnt. But the drain plug had some small metal shavings and gray paste in it. Sooooo like you I may have some issues.

I also have a lead on a 4R70W for parts. So I may tear it apart and upgrade to the 4R gear set and anything else it needs. I have followed your thread about your trans. I hope it goes together and works well this time. Good luck.
