Excluding the headers situation because long tubes solve the P problem, which of these heads is better as a cheap E7 replacement and why?

I did some looking around and found this:
GT40Ps are more efficient, meaning they use a smaller valve and still manage to flow about the same as a GT-40. The better velocity and revised spark plug position make for a cleaner burn and improved fuel economy (http://forums.stangnet.com/showthread.php?t=549276#). They are also cheap. Overall, they are a great head for performance (http://forums.stangnet.com/showthread.php?t=549276#) and daily-driver economy on a budget.

The biggest downside to the P's is having to run a longtube, or P specific shorty...either is a good bit more money than the fits all shorties.
Lots of people praise the P's like they're the greatest thing since sliced bread, but the GT40 heads have always been quicker on the Factory Stock "type" cars. Just like a Cobra intake, they are tried and true. Not to mention...usually cheap.
One thing to consider...
Buy any used head, then get them freshened up, and sometimes you're damn close to a set of ready to bolt on aluminum heads. I bought those Canfields that were on my white coupe, for $650...ready to bolt on. (still a low budget route IMHO)
Or if you insist on "stock" type heads, you can go ported E7's Thumpers for about $700 if I remember right. Or PM Brian Alloway as he had my old ported E7's that were for sale cheap...
With Canfields, stock cam, 1.7's and a Cobra intake went 12.40@110 first time to Cecil...and car was an absolute BLAST to drive. If I hadn't gotten top dollar for it, I'd still have it. :-D

Good info guys, thanks. Right now budget (or lack there of) is the deciding factor. If I had my pick, I'd throw on a set of 60379's and be done. Bob, how did your car run with the Thumper heads? I was looking at their site earlier today. I was also looking at these (http://www.tristatecylinderhead.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=40&osCsid=b61eedad2964f35720eb395a0d04bcf1). Of course everyone has used 40's and p's around until you're actually looking for them...lol.

I've been running a set gt40 iron's for about 12 months now. Minor mods include, intake, 1.7's, underdrives, intake, tb, with nitrous. Still running the stock cam, bottom end and untouched AOD/stall, capped off with 4:10's out back. Vast improvement over the E7's. I actually like the fact that the valves are 1.54/1.84. I have had zero problems with them. I've cycled about 2 dozen 10lb bottles through them, not too mention this is my 200 mile a week DD. Just a good overall iron head imo. Best time thus far is in my sig, street radials and stock suspension on a 125 shot. GL

The Thumpers were on my 89 GT Vert Eric. Car ran great NA. They worked especially well with the S trim and methanol. :-D
Brian was selling them for like 300 bucks not too long ago. He bought them from me for Sande's car, but never used them.

Is the altitude an issue where you race?

Note really. I know a lot of people in this area try to use the "elevation calculator" to try and figure their times at sea level, but other than that the humidity in the summer can hurt the performance a little.

I have to agree on the consideration of cost, of freshening them up. I paid $200.00 for a good used pair, had them done up at the shop and got crane springs, ect. For not alot more i could have gotten a set of aluminum. I did see a while back a set go on ebay for $550.00 that came off a crate engine and were supposed to be new.... That doesn't come around much though.
