I was referred here by SilverFox on the TCCoA site. I am undertaking my first tranny rebuild ever. I bought an 87 5.0 Tbird to replace my 96 Tbird that the Ice Queen took... Anyway, it was sitting for about a year when I bought it for $100.00. Was parked because it would not shift out of 1st. The tranny was rebuilt in Mar 05 and has about 20K on it. I have tried flushing and new filter/fluid, T.V. cable was broken (Now fixed) but cannot get it to shift. I have just finished tearing it down into the sub assemblies and don't know where to go from here. All of the bushings/parts etc... look fine, but then I don't know what I am looking at yet. $ is limited now so I need to fix it on a shoe string for now. I have a spare AOD (condition unknown) that came with the car that I am going to "Bullet proof" later. So after all of that here are my current questions... 1- How can I determine what year this tranny is? It is very clean, painted inside and I think but don't know that it was a swap.
2- What is the difference between cast and stamped drums? I am trying to figure out what rebuild kit I need and this is mentioned alot. 3- The overdrive band is red on the outer edges and black in the center. Is it burned up? This tranny will not be abused anytime soon as I have not done any mods to the car, it needs to roll first. Any help anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated!

Hello, i found this site from the TCCOA.
I am building a 94 Thunderbird S/C 5.0 conversion. This site looked like the place to be for my transmission questions. I am installing a 5.0 from a 93 Cougar, with Gt-40 iron heads, M-6250-E303 cam, 94/95 ford motorsport svo intake with 65mm throttle body. The rear axle has 3.73 gears and i have the original 4r70w that came with the car stock. I would like to find out what my best transmission options are without breaking the bank. I have heard something about using the 4r70w gearset in a aod which is something i am interested in. At first i thought i might just use the 4r70w transmission but after posting questions about the feasablity of having the S/C pcm worked over at blue oval chips, i did not recieve an answer. So i purchased at complete set up from A 91 cougar and that brings me back to using the aod. So anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks alot....
Mark

Check the valvebody. There is a stem on the side of the body where the linkage connects to a large slide valve, next to it is the throttle shift valve, press it down with your finger. It should freely move in and out on it's own, with some spring tension. If it sticks try lightly forcing it in and out. If this does not work carefully remove top plate of body. There are 3 round plates and a 5/16 head bolt on one end. If you don't know about the check balls in the body then do not tip it, keep flat and level, carefully pull up on the plate, trying not to tear the gasget, clean the area of the sticking valve with Carb cleaner, then pour some STP over the valve and work the valve as previously mentioned until it feels completely smooth with no binding or catching at all. Hope this is helpfull to you. And also check to see if TV cable is adjusted properly and not binding anywhere. I feel kinda stupid, I just noticed this was an old post!

Hello to CLICKCLICKRACING!! I spotted the web site in Mucsle Mustang Fast Ford Magazine. I was hoping there was a site somewhere for Automatics. Being an x rebuilder I was happy to find you. I am no longer a rebuilder, since having bladder cancer. Too many chemicals caught up with me. The doctors said I was to young and were shocked that I got this cancer since I never smoked or even drank much. But maybe I can still help others with their Trans problems. My wife and I own a 03 Mustang GT and an 04 Mach1. I own the GT. I keep the cars looking good, but since my surgery I don't do anything in the major upgrade catagory. I wish I knew how to send pictures but, I'm not savy enough. I know the Mach is of intrest to most people but my GT is not basic either. So thanks to the one who came up with this web site.

Hello. My name is Robert. My current project is a beautiful '93 Tbird with a 5.0 and an arrow straight body. I've always liked the Tbird but was never interested in Mustangs. That being said, I now have my eye on a '92 stang coupe with a 4 banger in it. But back to my bird.It runs great but needs a tranny. I'm probably going to rebuild it myself so I've been lurking and learning from you on this great site. You've already been a lot more help than you can imagine. I came across this site through Silverfox and Dirtydog on TCCOA.

It's not a race vehical by any means.
I found this site from a post I left on NetWork54, A person told me AOD's were not "weak" transmissions and posted a link. I'm very Impressed with the information here though. I recently started having problems (after 2 years) with my truck starting to pre-slip in first......Gradually, lated shifting to second and third....Then sometimes not shifting out of first and when it did It sometimes would not drop back down (in "D") to first with out me manually dropping at the traffic light. It has gotten to the point I think my Tourqe Converter is locked up ,Because It is not letting go and kills the engine if I let off the gas quickly. Now when I attempt to drive it in "D"
It shifts irratically once it finds it's way out of 1st.

I had it rebuilt 2 years ago , and religiously change the fluids.

The last time was recently, I changed the Trans Fluid I found no pieces or chunks at all , just more then normally, gritty(metallic) grey sludge.
The fluid and filter change did not effect anything after the change.

So I have parked (while it still moves) it till I figure out if I want to attempt a rebuild myself.

I have plenty of (basic) tools and air compressors, And have rebuilt a few engines and Replaced Transmissions , Just never rebuilt a Transmission.

This is about the most informative site I have found.
I sure would like to thank that person as well as all of you.

So, Nice to meet ya'll and Thank You.

Well, looks like I am the DFNG now. Fat, sixty, VN vet and retired. Or as my wife says in that OK accent, retaard. Not quite sure what she means but after 40 years she is hard to hear and never understood.

My 64 Fairlane made it through its previous owners without much damage and the wife bought it from our son's buddy's mom. The boys had abused it for a while but not too badly. When the wife got a Cherokee, she asked me what to do with the Fairlane. I paused for a millisecond and gave away all my other project cars then replied........ "Uhhhhhh, I'll take it!" Originally a 200 six and two speed Fordomatic and pretty clean, I drove it daily to work until retirement with a couple of pauses to put discs on the front then later a 5.0 generic roller engine and AOD in it.

Afterwards I would investigate an idea, save up, buy the parts and prep to thrash on a weekend to add them. By retirement, it had GT40P heads HiPo exhaust manifolds and a TransGo kit in it.

After fighting with the VA four years, I hired a professional mouth and joined the check of the month club. The medics said I am messed up like a soup sandwich but the gatekeepers kept checking their budget #'s and asking DC. Their bad, so sad, I'm glad now.

Since that wallow through the slime, I have added rear discs and a 9" locker with 4.11 gears.

Presently it is getting an interior makeover and sound system that don't show much.

The exhaust is loud, it rides a little rough, has a ragged idle and has chiropractic shifting. But then, I can't feel or hear very well so it is perfectly excessive.

Some pics can be found here. http://s6.photobucket.com/albums/y237/w2zero/

As long as I have pain, I ain't dead. I'll just keep on breaking mirrors cuz seven years of any kind of luck is good.

Whats up all. I recently purchased a 88 coupe. It had a 4 banger form the factory , but now has a 5 oh. I just recently aquired a turbo off of a 3116 cat motor ( 400 cubes). I want to use ot on the car somehow but do not know much about turbo setups. I see alot of people using old turbos off anything anymore and figured why not. I have GT - 40 upper and lower intake. E -303 cam, GT - 40 Heads ( 96 explorer). If any one can help with the set up , I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Hi, My name Is Kenny and I'm an AOD user.
I currently have a '64 F100 Longbed that I have resto-modded from the frame up.
There isn't a stock item on the truck except for the sheetmetal.
I'm not a mechanic, bodyman, or an engineer. But I have common sense and I approach all projects from that perspective.
A little about my truck...
1964 Ford F100 longbed styleside with 1974 351W and a late model AOD.

Frame has been fitted with a MII front end with 11" disc brakes, power rack and pinion, rear mono leafs. Gas tank relocated behind axle between frame rails.
Recently added an electric fan, A/C, and I rebulild the 9" thirdmember adding a tracloc diff.

I joined the board to learn more about my AOd and to fine tune it to my needs.

Hello guys, I'm really excited that theres a site where i can get answers to all my AOD questions, and i want to thank you guys in advance for your input. First off I own a 90 vert full weight gt, I'm lookin into building a 450 hp 331 trying to get the car into the 11.50s on drag radials. What gears would you guys advise me to use, in the rear? The cam is a lunati voodoo 282/290. lunati recommends a 2500 to 2800 is that to much for a street car I dont want to burn up the trans or converter Because of a non-lock up issue ? The car will make trips as far out as 250 miles away its not going to be a daily driver, but needs some of the characteristics. I would prefer a lock up converter, but will a lock up be needed? The car will be basically be a street strip cruiser 35% on the highway time. What trans mods would I need, or who builds theme in the houston area? Is this goal attainable without spending over 2100 on a trans. 3700 pounds 11.50 GT. AOD lock up can it be done under 2100?

I know more about the 4.6L than the pushrod and/or Carburated motors. Work for NUMMI, which is a GM/Toyota joint venture. We make the Toyota Corolla, Tacoma, and Pontiac Vibe(atleast through 2010) Live in Fremont, CA, so the emissions standards is difficult to get around.

I know some have wondered why put a modular motor in a Foxbody? Well for me, its because of the challenge, the wow factor, the ability to accept power adders very well and still get over 20 mpg hwy, better braking with hydroboost, and the Mach 1 ram air hood.

Got 2 projects underway:

Just joined and heard so many great things about this site. I have a 5.0 liter 1988 Tbird with an AOD that has become my toy. They tell me Silver Fox is the Man to help me with my AOD problems. My AOD will only shift hard from first (30 mph) to second (47 mph ) and don't have enough road to see 3rd. or 4th. I have adjusted the TV cable and the shifts don't change. If you disconect the cable the car shifts 1st.- 2nd. and 3rd. fine but not 4th. I have been told the valve body may have a stuck valve causing the problem. The fluid seems clean and smells fine and at the correct level. Any help would be appriciated.

I'm new to the site. I am finally finding time to work on my 91GT again after taking a five year hiatus to finish school and become a dad. My GT is a decently clean bolt on hatch that ran great until I had a guy install a trans go shift kit and a b&m converter. The shift kit got set up incorrectly a few times and by the time the installer got it sorted out, the damage was done. The OD band went out the second time I drove it after the install so I parked it. That was in November 2005.
Over the past five years I tinkered with it a bit and sold some parts off of it. I recently got the itch to start driving the car again so I have ramped up my efforts to get the car back on the road. I recently swapped out the 3.73s that were in it for some 4.10's, and bought a 2600 rpm converter from Dirty Dog. I picked up two used AODs to swap in, and I hope to get them in this winter. Although now that I found the site, I am going to try to save up for a Silver Fox valvebody before I swap the transmissions.
Great site, I look forward to using the technical advice on here when I go to tackle the swap.

Hi I'm Daryl and I have a Mustang problem. I own one...

I am from Maine and own a pathetic 92 LX that I just got together. For the past few years I have been working on and tuning a 90 Single Turbo Coupe(AOD, 467hp at the wheels
) and an 87 Supercharged Hatch(T5, 464 hp at the rear wheels) of my friends(I use Moates.net hardware).

I have fixed and half rebuilt AOD's in the past but this winter finally did a full rebuild with some upgrades. Got some great info off this bulletin board and am very thankful.

Found this site via a Google search.
Hoping to diagnose a problem with my '90 Mustang 7-Up AOD car. I also have a '71 Mustang Sportsroof project that is 351 Cleveland powered, but can go several different driveline ways before it sees the road. There's a fresh 460/C6 in storage, or it may get a 5.8W/GT40 aluminum heads/roller valvetrain/AOD/4.00 gears... still very undecided.
Thanks,
Pete

Well I'll say a little about myself here for the sake of all to know I've been around the block more times than I want to remember! LOL! I've raced stangs and built more 5.0l (we use to callem 302's)than Carter has liver pills, put quite a few in Ranger pickups, makes a great mustang killer! I currently drive a Stang and Ranger with a 5.0l. Rebuilt many a trans along with the rides I've assembled, probably older than three of most of you guys added together but do I know everything? Hell no, if I did Id probably retire! Everyone have a great day and keep turning those wrenches, the out come is knowledge!!
