View Full Version : AOD Shifts Early

I have a 1993 GT.

With the swap to 3:73 gears, the tranny is shifting early. I have heard it called "stack shifting". It just goes through the gears really fast. When floored, it shifts at about 4500 or so.

I have a tranny kit in to improve the shifts, and it does great. It's just that when it's in drive or overdrive, it just shifts through the gears really fast.

I was thinking of messing with the TV cable, but I thought I would ask around here first to get an idea of what else I might do.

I have thought of a manual valve body, but I drive this on the street most of the time and think it would be a pain after a while.

Anyone else have this problem or know what I can do to fix this?

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks
Jim

I would try the TV cable first and go from there...there is a sticky with the info on how to do it

good luck :)

Like Matt suggested, I'd try the TV cable adjustment first. I wouldn't think a rear gear swap would change the upshift rpm's...probably just a coincidence.

Well, I think the shift points are controlled by line pressure.
The tranny is turning faster at a slower speed with the 3:73s instead of the 2:73. The tranny gets up to pressure at a lower speed now.

I don't know if there IS a fix for this. Other people have the same thing going on, they just live with it. The guys with the 4:10s really feel it going throught the gears quick.

I think a manual valve body might be the way to go. Then that will take everything out of the loop, including the TV cable.

weird.
I've owned a half dozen or so AOD cars and none ever upshifted at different rpm's after rear gear swaps. My last one w/stock 273 gears, shifted 1st to 2nd at 5100 or so, then 2nd to 3rd at 4500...had the same exact shift rpm's when I swapped in 373's. The one before that shifted the same with 327 gears, as it did with 410's...

Maybe Silverfox can shed some light, since I've never had the issue you describe.
