Hi everybody.
I work all over the country, and never know where I'm going to be next.
Right now, just North of Denver till May, then SE MN for a year.
Old hotrodder - emphasis on old. Turned 60 last Dec. Most people
think I'm "younger" - I grew up in MN and explain there's just a shorter
growing season up there in "the tundra".
Anyway, after a plethora of classic muscle cars in my youth (incl a 375hp 396
67 SS Camaro, 66 426 Hemi, & 70 Challenger RT/SE 440+6 - all of course
"improved" to one degree or another), spent a number of years with
econoboxes resurrected from behind somebody's barn after a few
unfortunate mishaps. Finally started getting back into things a few years
ago with an 89 Lincoln Mark 7 LSC. Good all around package, but definitely
needed "more power!" So gathered parts for 3 years, then screwed together a
fairly mild 351. Rebuilt the AOD and added a few of the lesser expensive
upgrades and a mild converter.
Had to keep highway gears (went from oem 3:27 to 3:55 and larger tires)
for all my long trips, so researched a 4R70W swap for the lower 1st gear.
Also liked the idea of better control over shifting with a Baumann tCS.
Because I usually don't know how long I'll be at home - when I am -
I decided to enlist Silver Fox's skills in going thru the '00 4R rebuildable
core I bought. Now, along with a Mark VIII 4R shifter and a Baumann
TCS to go with the J Mod in the valve body, is sitting in my garage
waiting for me to get home in May.
First built the motor REAL mild, scared of gas prices. Course, THAT didn't
"get it" for very long. Went a halfway decent street cam (TF Stg 1) to
go with the 1.72 rockers. NOW I want better heads :) Never ends.
Have become an earnest student of particularly the 4R, after I did a lot
of studying and built my own AOD (and refreshed later when I had everything
apart to swap motors). So far, have about 150k on the 2 rebuilds and
it's still going strong, with a Baumann shift kit of course.
Now getting REAL anxious to do the trans swap. Hope to take it to the
local 1/8th for a "before" and "after" to see what improvement it may make
Been struggling with a converter choice - and researching. Before I
discovered much of the info, I was considering a re-stalled and rebuilt
oem police from a reputable outfit. Well, more info lead me to thinking
about Edge cuz of their good rep with AODs. Then more reading got me
up to a single plate 9.5" PI Stallion. Man, these things are expensive,
too! At least the good ones.
Hope to learn more here, both to continue with the 4R info, and with
converters.
I hope to retire in 5 years, and transfer essentially the whole drivetrain
into a restomodded 70 Mustang convert that I have. Course, then the
engine hopes to become a fairly stout 393, or acquire a centrifugal blower.
SO - hope to make a good, informed choice on converters thinking ahead
to that happy day.
