My auto tranny bit the bullit 2 days ago on my way back rom Dallas. I was a hundred miles away from home, driving in Overdrive, and the cars rpm's began to slip. The RPM's were at 2600 and fell instantly to 1100. When Id give the car throttle the rpm's would shoot up but the car wasnt accelerating. Then after a second or two itd catch and repeat the whole process.
I pulled into a gas station to check to make sure everything was fine and I didnt see any noticeable problems. I have an Art Carr Valve body so I stuck the car in first to get goin, the car didnt move. I had to rev the car up to 3k rpm and then like a hammer itd catch, and id leave the parking lot burning rubber. I felt like such a redneck.
Anyway, this problem happened in every gear, ist, 2nd, and drive. 30 miles away from my house Overdrive was completely gone and drive was almost finished. I had to drive the car at 3600 rpm, the rpm's would shoot down and it was like I was driving in neutral, then Id have to sit there and rev the car to 5600 rpm to try and get it to catch again. Once it did catch Id have to accelerate aggresivly to try and keep it in gear. After 3 or 4 seconds of accelerating Id have to do the whole process over again. I had too stop 5 or 6 times to give the car a rest, and after doing so the car felt refreshed, but it would lose its grip after 5 minutes or so of driving and the troubles would continue.
15 miles away from my house it completely stalled, couldnt get it to move regardless of what gear I was in or how long I rested the vehicle. I was stuck at 1:00AM in the middle of a country farm road surrounded by corn stalks. Kinda scary if you ask me.
Regardless I called a tow truck and got home.
My question to you guys is, does this sound like a prob with the torque converter or possibly the clutches within the tranny itself?
Also how difficult is it to replace an auto transmission? I can pick up a used one for 125$ and am willing to swap it in, I just need to know what Im getting myself into. I replaced my daily driver Honda's tranny last year, but its a 5spd. Do you guys feel a shade tree mechanic would have probs swapping an auto in if Ive never done it before?
Thankyou kindly.
