My auto tranny bit the bullit 2 days ago on my way back rom Dallas. I was a hundred miles away from home, driving in Overdrive, and the cars rpm's began to slip. The RPM's were at 2600 and fell instantly to 1100. When Id give the car throttle the rpm's would shoot up but the car wasnt accelerating. Then after a second or two itd catch and repeat the whole process.

I pulled into a gas station to check to make sure everything was fine and I didnt see any noticeable problems. I have an Art Carr Valve body so I stuck the car in first to get goin, the car didnt move. I had to rev the car up to 3k rpm and then like a hammer itd catch, and id leave the parking lot burning rubber. I felt like such a redneck.

Anyway, this problem happened in every gear, ist, 2nd, and drive. 30 miles away from my house Overdrive was completely gone and drive was almost finished. I had to drive the car at 3600 rpm, the rpm's would shoot down and it was like I was driving in neutral, then Id have to sit there and rev the car to 5600 rpm to try and get it to catch again. Once it did catch Id have to accelerate aggresivly to try and keep it in gear. After 3 or 4 seconds of accelerating Id have to do the whole process over again. I had too stop 5 or 6 times to give the car a rest, and after doing so the car felt refreshed, but it would lose its grip after 5 minutes or so of driving and the troubles would continue.

15 miles away from my house it completely stalled, couldnt get it to move regardless of what gear I was in or how long I rested the vehicle. I was stuck at 1:00AM in the middle of a country farm road surrounded by corn stalks. Kinda scary if you ask me.

Regardless I called a tow truck and got home.

My question to you guys is, does this sound like a prob with the torque converter or possibly the clutches within the tranny itself?

Also how difficult is it to replace an auto transmission? I can pick up a used one for 125$ and am willing to swap it in, I just need to know what Im getting myself into. I replaced my daily driver Honda's tranny last year, but its a 5spd. Do you guys feel a shade tree mechanic would have probs swapping an auto in if Ive never done it before?

Thankyou kindly.

is the trans full of fluid? IS the TV cable attached and properly adjusted?

These two things come to mind immediately...and of course, if the TV cable is broke, then...well,,,the trans is trachs :(

my car has a art carr manual valve body. From my understanding, the car doesnt need a kickdown cable if it has a manual VB...

Hey is that you Dan? Hah, sorry for the cheesy ques through email....Ive been studying up..watched the videos and have a much better general understanding of the AOD. I now realize my ques were..well just rediculous.. haha.

Got the tranny pulled yesterday by myself, on my back, only a foot and a half of room to work with, and in my colleges parking lot. It was the TC bolts like you mentioned through email which was keeping the tranny bolted.

The tranny fluid smelt burnt when emptied, didnt seem to be alot of fluid which came out.. Id say maybe about maybe 4 quarts when drained from the tranny itself, another 2-3 quartz in the TC and Id say about 2 quartz after removing the tranny and flipping it over..I noticed there was oil sprayed on the driveshaft and I think the tail shaft was missing a bolt as well...there were some metal shavings stuck to the magnetic drain plug... Unfortunately I guess Im going to have to rebuild this thing.

Im really interested in converting over to a 4r70w.. but daguum if I didnt already buy a 550$ edge converter for the AOD. Sucks! I wonder if andre would let me send this one back and get a converter for the 4r?
