My friend with an 89 5.0 just blew up his AOD and bought a nice built up onr to replace it with. He's giving me his old completely stock AOD once we put his new tranny in.
I've been wanting to put an AOD in my 66 mustang for a long time and I figure building it up myself would be cheaper than buying a built one but I haven't found too much info on what is needed or where to get it to make these things handle 500 fly wheel horsepower. (I should be at about 460 once I get some AFR 205's).
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

With the right parts that should be no problem at all. My AOD has been going in my car for 4 years now and was backed behind a 351 before that. My last dyno I made 556.9 rwhp. Check out Level Ten (http://www.levelten.com/index.html) for the parts. My AOD is Level Ten prepped and includes heavy duty bands/clutches, the "a" servo, and then I added a 1 piece Art Carr input shaft, PA 28 oz SFI Flexplate, and a Lentech Street Terminator valve body. A good converter, good valve body, and good input shaft are all the key elements to a good AOD IMO. Bob (REL3rd) is another member here who basically did a stock rebuild and put in the good valve body and converter and made over 500rwhp and went 10.2's, so the AOD's will hold up if you do them right.

Mind if I ask about how much you spent doing the buildup? Thanks for the link and info.

I bouight my tranny used, so I am not sure what it cost to have it all done. I would shoot level ten and email and I am sure they could tell you what it would cost.

:? eric my aod is an A.M.P> (all mustang performance) stage 2 trans, it is supposed to the same bands, clutch packs and servos that you mentioned. unfortunatly due to $ being tight at the end of the rebiuld i bought a B&M 2500 holeshot and it has the stock valvebody hence the 1-2-1 shuffle. about how much did you pay for your v-b and converter if you dont mind me asking.
p.s. the car doesn't launch anywhere near 2500 rpm's but fromabout 3000 rpm to 6000 it pulls really hard.

I think the valve body was around $350 back when I bought it. Check Lentech's site, they list the current prices on there. As for the converter I got my first one with the tranny since I bought the package used. The second converter I have retails for around $750 or so. A good converter new will run you around $700 or so, but you can always find a good used one and send it back for a refresh/restall for not too much $
