so my friend is swapping a 306 into his 4cyl 88 coupe, using the 4 cyl tranny, he decided that he would take the top cover off the transmission because he thought 90 weight was supposed to be in it, and wanted to check the gears because it had mercron in it.. at any rate, i have no clue what he was thinking, i wasn't there... but he managed to pull the rod out of the end of the cover, and it will not slide back in there for anything. you can shift gears fine. but when you do it moves the cover, not just the rod inside.. forgive me for my ignorance on this transmission, i've never had it apart. if anyone can help, or more than likely needs more info, contact me on yahoo, or aim under the same screen name (no spaces on yahoo) or reply on here.. trust me he will thank you guys big time.

The top of the T-5 (where the shifter/rod is) will need to be removed.

Where the rod goes, it should pop into a hole on the other side of the top. You have to remove a pin to remove where the shifter goes, slide that piece off (there is a spring and check ball underneath) then the top comes off.

Its much harder to explain than to do.
