so, they are basically the same thing except the 4R has different gearing????

ultimately, yes!
The details make the 4R much nicer, but you can take a 2012 4R and put AODE gearing in it (AOD gears actually) and it will perform the same....but the computer will not like it. MVB's don;t care at all :)
